Pretties on Etsy~

I have quite a few items I have chosen as "Favorites" lingering in my Etsy account. Pretty little things, that I don't really need, but for some reason they just call out to me, I am resisting the urge to splurge! {that was pretty lame, sorry}

I have been giving some thought to selling again on Etsy, I find the shipping to be very time consuming. For some reason I am just not good at packing things up, it takes me F O R E V E R...but I have things in my booth that I thought would fly out like hot cakes, such as two kitchen scales, a postal scale, metal baskets, cameras, old glass bottles, old tins and toolboxes and they are just sitting..

So I am thinking I need to open my Etsy store back up and add a few things, see how it goes...can you tell I am talking out loud, or more or less typing out loud my thoughts....these are the things I think about on a daily basis as I sit behind this desk, with a keyboard in front of me that is missing letters because I type so much they have rubbed off, I also wonder how long it will take for my legs to fall asleep if I sit in the same position behind this desk....

Vintage Settee~

 

I have a very rambunctious 4.5 year old.... Most of the items in my home aren't precious to me, which means if something breaks, I don't have a major melt down, usually I can move on. I do however, have my quarks, like dirty hands being run down the walls in the hallway, or climbing on the ledges in my house....or jumping on my couch, which happens to be one of my punks favorite past times.

I found this Vintage settee on Craigslist, and I fell madly in love with it. After a few text messages back and forth with the owner, I had cut a deal, and the settee was to be mine. I tried to get the best price for her, as I knew it would have to be recovered...and when I went to get her, there were a few minor cracks in the frame, and she was more beat up then I had thought...

I managed to get an even better deal for her....and as I loaded her in the back of the pool man's truck, he actually admitted to me that she was a purdy piece of furniture. This could have been a first for the pool man commenting on my vintage furniture...and probably a last!

The sette sat all through Christmas behind my dining table as a bench...it didn't get used and I actually, **gasp** forgot about her...until the other day, when I pulled her out to gaze at her beauty... the moment I took my camera out to take a few photos of her... out of no where comes my 4 year old...playing games with me while I tried to shoot photos...belly laughing cause he was being such a pistol...he is if nothing else, his own biggest fan and loves attention like a new puppy dog! Of course I indulged him for a bit...

A few minutes later, and some sorted smiles from me as my punk climbed over my furniture to get in some photos....I stood back and looked at her...trying to decide what fabric I should purchase to recover her and make her purdy again...and all of a sudden my punk jumps up on a piece of furniture that sits right where she would officially be going...he did some silly dance stomping all over my fluffy white pillows, and checked out the window to see if any of his neighbor friends were outside to play with...and it dawned on me...

In all her tattered, beat up glory, she is beautiful...she is perfect for my 4 year old rambunctious punk to climb on..and even though she isn't perfect, I think I am going to keep her in her raw state for a while...after all, she seems to feel comfortable just the way she is, and that....that is something I long for....

She went in her new spot today, and I look at her often as she is a good reminder that even though I am not perfect....I need to learn to be comfortable with who I am...comfortable in my own skin....tattered, raw and quarky.

She will make a good perch for my punk as he watches the rain fall out the front window and she adds so much personality to our front room! I think she is my favorite piece so far in our nest...but like always this momma has something else up her sleeve! {she snickers}

Cheers to learning to love what lies before you in the mirror...tattered and raw...not perfect but YOU! And Cheers, to rambunctious 4 year olds...who like to steal the show!

Vintage Details~

Here are just a few more photos of the booth I thought I would share. I went in today to take some more photos and found out that I sold 4 treasures! I was so excited, now I know I have a long way to go, but it still made me feel like I had made some progress!

Two of the sweetest treasures sold before I could snap photos, I will remember to be better next time and take my camera more often! I also need to get better at taking photos in the akward lighting, sorry about all the yellow glare....!

Stella made her debut and all the ladies love her pettie coat...I have had more comments on the pettie coat then anything else...lots of "oh I remember when I used to wear one of these..."

I love to tell them, that I still do wear one of those with some of my dresses, the ladies get the biggest kick out of that!

Of course Stella had to adorn her own set of wings and I think it will be fun to see how many different ways I can doll her up!

Who can pass up little wings, tied to two vintage bibles {another obsession} and an old book?

The vintage mod 1960's tables were a gamble, but I think they could be very cool with the right decor....and I honestly love the vintage yellow color!

I am obsessed with butterflies and thought this old lampshade with swarms of butterflies would make a cute mobile above a vintage crib!

A couple vintage brownie cameras and old scales....I also folded a bunch of pages in some old books I had stashed away, I like the texture they bring to the table...

This is another lampshade, I love the shape and think it would be cool to somehow wire this for a single light bulb....perhaps a project for the pool man!

This dresser is really old, it has original casters and pretty lines. This was my first attempt at using Annie Sloan Chalk paint and I have to say I love it~

I also painted a pretty swirly pattern in grey on the top of the dresser and sanded it way down to give it a worn in feel. I think it compliments the sweet baby shoes pretty well...

I also think I need a little girl! {she grins...}

Well that's all folks, I have a lot more treasures to add to the booth. There are still two boxes sitting in the garage to unload, but I didn't want to clutter it up too much!

No. 24

Hello there!

Well it is officially a new year and with that new year, I decided it was time to take the plunge, so not only did I finally finish some furniture projects over the Christmas break, but I also went and got myself a Booth space at an antique store! This has been a dream of mine for quite some time, and I figured with two jobs, two kids and all the extra time I have on hand, I could muster up some more energy and become a shoppe keeper of sorts!

The space is very small, but I think it is manageable, and it is right down the street from my second job, so I can pop in and fluff here and there when need be. I spent basically all day on Tuesday setting up, and yesterday was my 1st official day as a booth owner! I loved every minute of the set up, playing with different scenarios, even tho I had the whole booth set up in my head before I set  foot in the store! I can't wait to change it up, if some of the furniture sells.

I have my fingers crossed this works, and I can make some extra money to support my family after I quit my big girl job! I think this would be a great way to keep my creativity going while raising my babies!

Here is just a sneak peek of my space. I have added a few things, but I keep forgetting to grab my camera when I leave the house in the morning. So I tied a ribbon around my finger and tomorrow I will not forget to take my camera and snap some better pictures to share!

Black Vintage~

Happy Friday lovelies

What a crazy busy week and to think next week is Thanksgiving, how in the heck did that happen?

I have to remind the pool man weekly of his duties and our schedule because for some reason he doesn't think it really matters, and well that leaves me worrying he will forget to pick up our punk from preschool or my babies will be parked out on the curb in front of daycare because he was too busy and forgot to pick them up before 5 o'clock. Thankfully it hasn't happened yet!

I had to remind him yesterday that next week is Thanksgiving...and that got me to thinking about Christmas and how I have not given too much thought about decorating or buying gifts...honestly the thought overwhelms me a tad & makes me anxious.

With all of that, I got sidetracked this morning as my mind usually does and I started to think about decorating. You see my brain usually goes to decorating when it feels overwhelmed or anxious or threatened or tired or sad. I think it is a coping mechanism I acquired some time ago, and honestly it works, you should try it.

On to decorating we go, which brings me to the subject of "black vintage"...at times i am completely smitten with whites, creams, aquas and pinks or what some might equate to as "white vintage".

 Items and decorating that give my house a light and airy feel, a little texture, a little feminie elegance and whole lot of character....

but, and you knew there was a butt, I mean but coming, right?

Then I come across photos like these:

And, when I am bored at my desk at work, shhh don't tell my boss...I hunt through Etsy and find myself attracted to items like these:

I'd like to think I can have the best of both worlds, that there is a grey {and yes it is spelled grey, not gray... she snickers} area where I can have a wonderful black typewriter sitting next to a pair of pretty pink pointe shoes...

A Labor of Love Farm Wedding~

A few months ago, a sweet girl contacted me via e-mail asking me where I got my "welcome" banner that adorns the entry way of my home as she wanted to use one for her upcoming wedding...

I sent her the information and she promised me she would send me photos of her wedding. A few days ago she made good on her word, and sent me a link to her wedding photos.

As I clicked over to the link I was completely blown away at the amount of love and personal touches that went into this amazing wedding that was held on the family farm she grew up on in Canada.

Hollis, the beautiful bride describes her wedding as a true labor of love...as her family farm was transformed into a gorgeous venue by her family and friends filled with vintage and personal touches. Her wedding was everything she had envisioned and more since she was a little girl...

I asked her permission to posts photos of her special day here so all of you could feel like you were part of the magic of that day...that is exactly how I felt after looking at these photos and seeing all the hands that made this such an incredible day in her life...

From her own words, "I would say almost the entire wedding was DIY! The projects covered all aspects of the wedding. We sewed bunting, painted signs, made our own cakes, designed our ceremony site in the woods, renovated our barn, my mom created the bar out of an ash tree, handmade bistro tables, my mother in law made the flower girl dresses, scrap booked our place cards, designed maps, we made a vintage brooch bouquet, made our own favours, wrote our own vows and grew the produce that was served at our meal. And beyond that we collected antique dishes from thrift stores, auctions, antique stores and flea markets and used vintage pop bottle as vases for our centerpieces."

Vintage Projects~

Over my two weeks of bed-rest, I tried to busy my hands without having to move furniture or climb the stairs a million and one times...these little projects took very little effort...

I had this roll of vintage wallpaper I picked up at farm chicks, and thought this would be a great time to tackle this project, it took me a few hours, only because I can't cut a straight line to save my life, and using double stick tape is an art  I have not mastered, but here is the finished product...

Vintage Wallpaper lined Drawers:

 

I had enough to creatively finish 6 drawers, I used some left over pieces for the last drawer and lined them up as good as I could...let's just say I tried not to throw much of this pretty paper away!

 

I used double stick tape to hold it down, not because I can't commit to glue, but because if we ever move someone else might not appreciate my love of vintage wallpaper and this way it can peel right up...

{shame on them if they don't love it as much as me....}

I still have four more drawers that are drab and white left to do, I just need to find some more pretty paper to use!

The next project was super easy, I used an old wood frame I bought for $5.00 at the flea market, this one already had the red ticking fabric and a piece of cardboard used for backing. So all I had to do was attach a wire to the back for hanging, inserts some push pins, and I had a fun place to hold all my necklaces!

 

I hung this up in my closet, as we are fortunate enough to have a pretty big walk in closet so when I am done getting dressed, yes I dress in the closet.... I can finish my outfit with a pretty piece of bling!

  

And this little project is oodles of fun for little ones...

Who can't keep their hands off the pretty jewelry!

 

 {he got a hair cut yesterday, and I swear every time he gets a hair cut he looks a year older...and so handsome...I'm just sayin'!}

 I did this fun project one afternoon while my son watched, yup you guessed it "Scooby Doo" and yes I am officially over the whole Scooby Doo thing...you can only watch so many episodes...my goodness!

Anyway, a good friend of mine sent me these cute little vintage map circle cut outs, I have seen other versions of these made on Etsy, and I thought since I had some free time...i would give it a try. I sewed by hand about 20 circles front and back to give them a bit more sturdiness...so more like 40 circles in total...I sewed them to some vintage seam binding I had on hand...

{you can get a whole roll of vintage seam binding on Ebay, if you are interested...}

 

 

Eventually these cuties will hang somewhere special....ya know since climbing a ladder probably isn't the best idea right now!

 

So there you have it easy peesy projects, just in case you find yourself on bed rest for two weeks!

Vintage Windows~

Well hello there darlings glad you could join me for my last little ditty of decorating non-sense...

Are you completely and utterly bored here yet...?

oh please don't say yes.

I can't take rejection, just like I can't take it when the pool man drinks my last beer or your heel breaks on your way into work and the hammer you found in the tool box under the sink doesn't even get it back into place and you have to walk around the office with no shoes on and everyone sees how short you really are, but you are glad it is the morning so your feet don't stink yet...oh sorry, TMI?

It did happen, really, I am not lying or fibbing or making any of that up, in fact my co-worker even tried to smash the darn heel back on...cheap shoes, now where did I put my Jimmy choo's...

ha, now I am kidding...I can't afford Jimmy Choo's, I can't really afford shoes in general, but there I go again losing track of my post...and my mind..."I'm losing my mind" {name that movie, ok I will help you...Robots, yes we watch lots of movies in our nest...I will admit it!}

Back on track, sorry that was an ugly tangent, imagine how I get when I really have something to talk about!

Last Friday I might have said something along the lines of, "I changed my mind 'bout something"~ however i have an awful long term memory and last Friday was soo long ago I could be lying...

Anyway, over the weekend, the pool man to much of his chagrin helped me with a few low cost projects I thought I would share...

I acquired a few vintage windows from my sweet friend Marie ...

and the minute she dropped this one off I knew exactly where it was going...

Yes originally this wall had all of that color on it with the fabric circles, etc...

What you have a awful long term memory as well..?

And here we are today!

I just wasn't completely in love with the look, and I recently made a playroom under our stairs for my punk and those fabric circles look smashing in his playroom...

I repainted this window with paint we had on hand and the pool man helped to hang it over the turquoise dresser...

I will tell ya, at first he hung it too high, and then when I made him move it, it ended yup crooked...

And by the time we had pulled the baby off the ladder for the 50th time and he was annoyed at me...

I was doubting the window was going to get hung at all!

But alas he pulled through...ahh love that guy, give him a medal!

I added a little crown embellished with turquoise and white polka dot paper to the corner, and when I get some extra time I will make some fabric bunting to string across the top of the window for some added whimsy!

ohh look who had some extra time...my sweet momma cooked this right up with fabric we had on hand...

   

Isn't she just the best mommy in the world?

And no you can't have her....I will not in any way allow that...you can borrow her though, she is pretty funny and well I might be biased but she can decorate like no ones biz-nas!

This was another window we got from Marie, the glass had a huge crack down the side, the pool man popped the glass out, and we headed to the hardware store and picked up two packages of cork board and a small test sample of the funky blue color paint you see below...

I used a piece of cardboard to adhere the cork-board for the backing...

And then added strips of remnant fabric I had on hand in both burlap and the pretty pattern fabric {that makes me swoon} and just adhered it with hot glue to the front of the cork- board...

 Then I just pushed the whole thing into the frame...

And since our punk is starting preschool this year {she grabs a tissue to wipe a tear from her eye} and I am surely going to be bombarded with fabulous art projects, this little cork-board will be perfect for displaying his master pieces on...

The pool man hung it in his playroom or as I call it, his hideout!!

It took him forever to hang the darn thing up and at one point he came out from the dungeon hideout and told me "he really wasn't the man for the job", but I ignored him, like I normally do and smooched my boy to whom I was snuggling with on the couch, and let the pool man continue on...

He finished...sweating and all, give this man a medal!

The pool man's time...well you already know this one...priceless!

You can find old windows through craigslist, at antique stores, on the side of the road if you're lucky, at flea markets and even salvage yards, like Habitat for Humanity. Most of the time they aren't very expensive, so the projects can be endless~ Just remember when hanging them to secure them to a stud in the wall or you may have a disaster on your hands as they do have some weight to them!

And I am totally done bombarding you with useless, silly decorating projects, well that and my fingers can't take anymore hot glue gun burns!!!

I have a girls weekend planned, sun, margaritas, or was it water~ melon~ritas, I can't remember, a swimming pool, no hubbies and no babies!!

P.s. I signed the pool man's father's day card with "muwahh" and when he was reading it, he looked at me puzzled and said "what does M-wah mean," and i was like "what", and he was like, "I don't get it" and I was like, you don't know what "muwahhhhh" means? and he was like..."what is wrong with you", and I was like never mind, and I grabebd a pen and scratched it off the card....the pool man just doesn't get it, but I still love him....

You should hear some of the other stuff he says to me...SHOCKING I tell ya, shocking!

P.s.s. oh and by the way, Urban Barn is having their grand opening this weekend, don't want to miss it! Seriously...amazing stuff!

 

Pretty Picnic Basket~

Top 'o the morning to ya girlies!

Can you believe it is July 14th already?

The weather here has just decided to co-operate after weeks of June gloom, and we are loving it, especially my punk who says to me when he really wants to go out and play at 7:00 at night, "but mom it is a beautiful day outside"...I usually retort with a smile, it sure is buddy, it sure is...and it is almost bedtime...!

I do like his enthusiasm for life, it certainly is contagious!

There is nothing more carefree in the summer then packing up a picnic basket, heading out with your little adorned with flip flops in which he is still learning to walk in and your heart filled to the brim with love, that even the sun can't outshine you...

But all of that flies out the door when you don't have the one essential item for a picnic...

The basket!

I have been on a quest to find a vintage basket for some time and a week or so ago I came across this one, for $9.00!

{I almost passed her up, what was I thinking?}

I swooped her up, in all her woven wood glory and she sat for a while.

Now there was nothing wrong with her to begin with, she was in good condition, big enough to fit our family of 3's munchies in just fine and her hinged top worked like a charm...

But in my fashion I couldn't leave her alone....

So I got to work...

 Now I don't sew, I leave all of that up to my mom...but I can stitch with a needle and thread, so I stitched together some burlap ruffles with extra burlap I had on hand and glued those around the top of the basket with a hot glue gun...

I then added a little lace detail from my vintage lace collection over the burlap ruffles...

Just to add some pretty over the rough burlap edges....

Using a scrap of fabric and another doily I embellished the front with a pinwheel of vintage fun...

And hoped in the end it matched the hap hazard liner I made using part of a vintage sheet!

The pool man drilled a hole in the top of the basket, so I could thread a ribbon through in order to keep the basket closed!

 I went a little haywire with the ruffles!!

{she giggles to herself...I might need ruffle therapy soon or more time to do silly random projects like this one...!}

Also, you can find doilies, vintage sheets, fabric remnants, and sometimes ribbon at thrift stores for near pennies, that is how I started my collection and many of these items have come in handy...easy to store and great for embellishing your projects!

Now if I only I didn't have to work, the wee one and I would be on our way to the beach for a picnic of sorts!

Butterflies & Angel Wings~

Morning lovelies~~

A little more decorating on a budget...with butterflies and angel wings!

Lucy my vintage mannequin has been around for almost 8 years and has been decorated in varying attire, but recently I decided to make her a wee bit more whimsical...

I love butterflies, and had some extra sheet music laying around, so I hand cut all of the butterflies that flutter around Lucy...I hot glued them to a long piece of ribbon so I didn't have to permanently keep her dolled up in butterflies and then attached the ribbon to her with a few stick pins.

Her necklace is just a piece of vintage lace that was wrapped around a package from Etsy and her tag that says "You are Lovely" was also added to a purchase I made a long time ago on Etsy, I save every little thing that comes in those pretty packages, even the ribbon and try to re-use them!

Her belt was made from fabric rosettes glued to a piece of ribbon and tied in the back, it helped to cover the ugly waist band of her vintage crinoline!

{the same crinoline that my punk loves to pull on for some reason!}

For a bit 'o whimsy I recently added on a pair of angel wings, necessity, of course not...

Fun...you bet!

I bought these off e-bay and they are made out of real ostrich feathers, I bought a size 1/2-3 years cause Lucy isn't that big and attached them again with several stick pins...

She is in heaven now with her new set of wings!

I know this kind of decorating is not for everyone, but remember paper butterflies look cute anywhere, tucked in flower frogs, strewn across a welcome wreath (project in the works), placed inside apothecary jars,on gift packages, etc...And the angel wings would look darling hung from the ceiling in a little girls room or lovingly laid upon some vintage books!
